Some problems and suggestions

Post by Yshay »

Hi,
Just bought trackIR 3 Pro with the hat.
I Installed the updated software (4.0.19).

This is an amazing product, it changes everything and might change the way we use computers in the future.

I found 3 major problems in the software, and would like to see them fixed:

1. You can't switch to mouse emulation.
I never tried mouse emulation, but I think mouse emulation should be just what u call it, it should perform the regular funtion of the mouse, independent of the application running, so u could use it for changing your view in a flight sim, in a FPS game or just to point your mouse in windows. The fact that u can't do any of these things in the software is unacceptable.

2. When I first tried to move my head, I noticed that I get a delayed, and un-natural response (in the "Heads" preview). In games this resulted in PIO (pilot induced oscillations) - you try to move your head somwhere, becuase of the delay there is no response, you instinctively move your head further, then the response arrives sending your view much further than you wanted. You immediately over-correct in the opposite direction, etc...
I found that in the settings xml file, there are few parameters relating to the ratio of movement which don't appear in the software. One of them is the minimal ratio, which was set by default to 0.25. changing that to 0.0 solved the problem. Not being able to control these parameters through the software in unacceptable.

3. I think adding more points to the profiles, and increasing the resolution of the lower values would greatly improve the abilty to better control the track. I think the high values of acceleration (above 20) are not used (too much acceleration), and in the more used range between 0 and 10, you have only 10 points, and more points would result in better customization ability.

Well, thanks, i hope this can help. And again, all in all - i am very pleased and love my new TrackIR...

Hi YShay,

Mouse emulation is slated to be put in a future release of the TrackIR v4 software. Becuase it is a completely brand new set of code, mouse emulation was pushed back so that the 6DOF features could be fully supported. We will see mouse emulation soon though. I agree that it is critical.

Interesting that you ended up with a delay. I have never noticed this and have not edited any of the .xml files directly. This might have been one of those rare things that only a few users experiance but I am not sure. Will be interesting to see the NP guys response to this one.

Back when the v3 software was in beta and not released yet, NP had many more points to the curve and we tested all sorts of configurations with it. What it all came down to was that more were not needed. The amount of edit points that are in the software now are perfectly sufficient to customize the curve how you want it and any more only makes it more confusing and adds no additional customization to the curve.

I know that you would think logically that more points would be better... but through testing this was found to be not true. The difference between each dot is very very small in actual head movement. The dot transitions the spanning of those curve points so quickly that that there was no time or need for individual acceleration values between each.

I hope I explained this well enough to be understood. Just know that more points were tested in the past and found to be excessive, confusing, and irrelavent.

Take Care,

Charlie,
About the curve, I still stand by my last arguments, though I have another input about that topic. You get extremely different responses between wearing the hat normally or backwards... So, when you wear it normally you need less gain because the extension of the hat provide some gain. When you wear it backwards, the current condition of the points and possible acceleration levels are adequate.
So, I would recommend NP to add a recommendation on wearing the hat backwards when using the TIR. However, they should restrict it to the use of TIR so u won't see too many backward-hat-wearers out in the streets.
:-)
