3-Marker Calibration

Post by dbarber@ist.ucf.edu »

Hello, I'm trying to figure out what some of the new options are for 3-Marker Calibration. Specifically, what does the Single Focal option under Advanced Options do? Does that mean that I do not have to have a single focal point for all of my cameras? If so, does that mean I should be able to have say 2 focal points to cover a larger volume?

It is referring to the camera lenses themselves.

With the new calibration it is no longer a requirement to aim all the cameras in the volume toward a center point. You will still want to ensure a good amount of overlap, but you can adjust them to get better edge coverage or a slightly larger volume size.

Hi Vincent, is that mean we can expand the capturing volume with this? I got 18 V100 cameras set up. what is the optimum capturing volume that I can expect with my system.

Cheers,

Currently the setup area is going to be about the same, as the max. distance is still about 21 feet, for the cameras.

You can move the cameras, off center, to allow for a little larger capture area, within your standard setup.

Thanks Vincent I try this out, one more question, still I am using one marked wand tool to calibrate the system, what are the benefits of using 3 marker tool to calibrate the system? is this also help to maximize the capturing volume? Cheers

The 3 marker wand is needed to do the 3 marker calibration.

If I use the 3 marker what would be the benefit of that.

Hi Buddhi,

Improvements that the new calibration (which can only be used with the three-marker wand) can offer include:

- Improved tracking and accuracy
- Better coverage near capture volume edges
- More flexible camera arrangements
- Exceptional ray convergence and volume uniformity
- Calibration results shown real-time during solving
- Real-time visualization of wanding, volume size, and error*
- Continue to refine calibration in the background during tracking, and apply the results at any time*

*Only available in Tracking Tools

We recently heard from Brad Friedman (Director of Software and Pipeline at Method Studios, who posts on these forums occasionally), that he's getting some of the cleanest data he's ever seen with the new calibration. We've heard similar feedback from other users as well.

Hi Seth, thanks very much, this is wonderful, still I am using one maker wand method, time to move to the three marker wand. I think I just have to purchase the 3 marker calibration tool.

Cheers

Yep, as long as you have a current license for your application (ARENA, Expression, or Tracking Tools), all you need to make the upgrade is the OptiWand, which you can purchase from our website.
