dots, clips and so forth

Post by mwhybark »

I picked up a TrackIR 5 set just before christmas, demoed it a couple of times, and it worked fine. I got busy and did not have time to fly for a couple of months.

Earlier this week, carved out an hour to fly and went to put the cap with the clip on, only to find that it's gone! Who knows what happened, maybe one of my cats decided it would make a good toy.

So I have ordered a new clip (not the pro clip) and some extra reflective material.

Of course, I have the time to fly -right now- and am wondering about homebrew solutions. Elsewhere on the web I noticed that the important specs for the reflective dots is the relative distances side to side and front pair to rear, and that additional dots are reported to improve tracking accuracy.

I normally wear glasses, and would much prefer to be able to attach the clip (or a homemade analog) to my glasses than to use the cap method. I do not wear a commset while flying.

Is there documentation for a homebrew glasses mount?

Is there a way to configure the basic clip for attachment to glasses?

Finally, can the TrackClip PRO be mounted on glasses? Have other glasses wearers documented alterations to the product to accomplish this?

Thanks in advance!

one more thought - if the trackclip pro can be jimmied to work with glasses, is there a retailer in the puget sound area that carries it?

Chains in the area include Best Buy, Game Stop, and Fry's.

I ended up making three mocap balls with three cedar closet balls and 3m reflective tape, then velcroed them as close to what I recall the dimensions of the clip being on to a baseball cap. good enough for now!

Hey, if it works...

The TrackIR software knows the exact dimensions of the TrackClip, and makes its calculations based off of those. If you get "close enough" there is a reasonable expectation that it should work okay, but not close to perfectly. I'd love to see a picture of the homebrew solution, though!

will do, tomorrow, I think.

the guesstimated ball locs were each about a half inch beyond the actual.

it worked well enough for a day or so, but the messy 'faceting' on the homebrew mocap balls (1/2 in cedar sock drawer spheres) led to occasional jumpiness. I spent some time thinking about doing proper orange-peel sections and realized, hell, I already spent the money on the new clip, this should be as quick and dirty as possible.

one hopes you'll be amused to hear the cap was a dot-com bubble freemium from a decade ago.

Well, the TrackClip is compatible with almost 100% of hats out there, although i'll give you points for style on that one.
