18 Camera Setup

Post by sun_sam »

Hi there,

actually we've got a 12 camera setup with tripods and 6m diameter. The camera's heights are 1.7m for the lower circle and 2.7m for the upper. The maximal usable capture volume diameter is 2.00m.
It's a bit disappointing to see, that the actor can't move much (making karate moves), because of massive tracking errors. The system is calibrated with excellent results. We're using Arena 1.7 final with windows 7 pro.

What should we do to optimize this?

My last idea was to improve the diameter by putting 6 additional cameras into the circle (not changing to truss), but will this help? Or if we will improve cameras, is it better to rebuild the system to a truss setup?

Greetings

Well, there are a few things that can be done to enhance the capture volume:

1: Switch to 12 stands or truss. This will spread out your cameras around the volume a bit more and help enhance coverage in areas where occlusion is an issue.
2: Switch lenses to 3.5mm. Increased field of view on the cameras can help to increase the coverage.
3: Add more cameras. By increasing camera count to 16 or 18, you decrease the possibility of occlusion related tracking problems.

Truss is excellent in more permanent installations, and would be highly recommended for arrangements with more than 12 cameras. Switching lenses after installing truss can help to improve coverage, however if you are staying in a circular arrangement, it may help to add cameras and/or stands before switching lenses.
