Optitrack setup

Post by eadatto »

Hello:
I want to ask you some questions about the right setup an calibration of my system. My cameras are placed with the square setup: 6mts side, upper cameras at 2.4mts, lower at 1.8mts, all of the in the portrait mode (640x480px). We have two types of lens mixed: upper corner cameras have 4.5mm lens and the rest 3.5mm.

Questions:

Is this mix of camera lenses a good idea? If not, wich lens do you recommend for this area?
Is the orientation of the cameras right?
Having a dark environment would help to the recognition of the opticals? And what if we use some external IR source? would this help the cameras or would it drive them crazy?

In this link http://dl.dropbox.com/u/13445739/Example_Scene.rar i'm sending to you some example files of what i'd been working with. I want to know if the ammount of noise of those opticals is OK for a static one.

Thank you very much in advance for your time!
Regards.

Ezequiel.

Hello -

The dropbox link appears broken, would it be possible to repost?

Generally for a 6 or 8 camera system, i wouldn't recommend using this mix of lenses. I'd probably recommend all 4.5mm lenses. The reason for this is that the wider angle lens can add some bloom to the markers, which can potentially lead to inaccurate data in low camera count systems due to the lack of redundancy.

Orientation and placement of the cameras is difficult to assess just by description, if you could repost the example scene, I can try to look at it from your data and see what I can find.

As for the lighting, as long as the ambient lighting is fluorescent or incandescent, you should be fine. Sunlight, halogen lamps, and high pressure sodium lighting can all cause IR interference.

Hey!

the link is up again! http://dl.dropbox.com/u/13445739/Example_Scene.rar

I have 12 cameras, the 4 upper corner cameras have 4.5mm lens and the rest 3.5mm.

Well, the data looks good. The volume looks a bit thin in some areas, I'd look at setting the upper cameras to landscape, or atleast the 4 "single" cameras to landscape. 8 3.5mm lenses seems a bit excessive, but it seems to be working okay. .pt2 files of an actor suited up and walking around may provide a better feel for the volume than the ground plane does, though.
