The problem surfaced again after a few days, so I have switched to a USB hub. So far so good after a few days. Why might this make a difference?

What may happen is that the device isn't getting supplied enough amperage, from the USB port, so it doesn't fully initilize. Which then keeps the system from fully detecting the device, until you reset the USB connection. This forces the system to redetect, and therefore fully power the USB port.
With a powered USB hub, the ports are all receiving a full 500mA of current. This is independent of the actual USB connection from the PC, so the TrackIR can have enough amperage regardless of what the PC is doing for current.
